Andrée Weimer - "My goal was to show the inside of a slave ship sailing toward America. I painted a lot of slaves in order to depict different emotions such as fear, anger or despair. I purposely used a lot of dark colors making it hard for the observer to first realize the size and depth of the ship; then little by little the museum guest notices each of the 48 souls chained to the boat, some bleeding, some crying. Looking up through a hole in the ceiling, a visitor can glimpse a small piece of sky. Nevertheless, there is a heavy feeling overcoming the watcher; a tragedy is unfolding before their eyes. Realizing this mural was very important for me because I believe it is our duty to inform the next generation about what happened in the past. I am thankful that Dr. Mattox offered me the opportunity to do this."
